Laser cutting is a modern technology in which a high-powered laser is directed at the desired surface to cut different shapes and forms. The material usually burns or melts, leaving a high-quality surface finish. Since there is no direct contact between the laser and the surface in use, the level of precision and accuracy in the laser cutting process is much more as compared to conventional methods.

Apart from the normal CO2 laser used in most processes, metal cutting employs the use of three other processes, namely Oxygen cutting, Nitrogen cutting and Sublimation cutting. The oxygen process creates more heat on account of the reaction between the metal and the gas. The extra heat assists in the cutting process. On the other hand, when an inert gas like nitrogen is used for cutting the metal, additional power is required.

Since metals are good conductors and reflectors of heat, the intensity of the laser needs to be altered, depending upon the nature of the metal. The laser beam is guided around the metal surface to get the desired shape.

Laser metal cutting offers several advantages over the other processes such as plasma cutting, water-jet cutting and flame cutting. The laser process is not only faster than the other methods, but also offers unparalleled levels of accuracy and quality. The chances of damaging the surface being cut are also reduced.

Sheet Metal Tools - For Cutting & Layout

Sheet metal is being used for different purposes like making of kitchen sinks, roofing, making of car bodies, etc. For these purposes the sheet metal cutting of metal is a very important process. We can cut the sheet of metal easily with the use of proper tools, but care should be taken in cutting the metal since the edges of sheet metals would be sharp, which may cause some blood wounds.

Tin snips are hand-tools for cutting sheet metal. This tool is of two types. In Electrical powered shears, a movable cutting blade and a crank drive are used for cutting sheets of metals, which works with the help of battery powered electric motor. Computer Numeric Control lasers cuts the sheet metal by passing a laser light over the surface of the metal sheet. Computer Numerical Control punch press cuts the metal into different shapes like circle, square and hexagon. Here, the sheet metal is placed between the bottom and top tools of the punching machine.

Training is very much essential for working with metal sheet tools. The steel workers should learn to mark measurements on the sheet, so that the sheet can be cut and joined to get the desired shape. If one learns to use layout tools, the process of shaping metal sheet for different purposes will become very easy. Scribe and straightedge, squares, prick punch, Protractors, dividers, circumference rule, trammel point are some of the tools used for the layout purpose.

The scribe and straight edge is the tool used for drawing a straight line on the metal. Squares are used to draw perpendicular and parallel line on the sheet. The prick punch is used to mark the starting and ending point of the line drawn with the help of scribe. The protractors are used to mark the preferred angle on the line drawn. Dividers and trammel points are used to mark circles and arcs in the metal. The final tool circumference rule is used for quick reference of the whole measurement of the circumference of the circle.

Thus, the layout and cutting tools are of great help to the steel worker to cut the metal according to the desired shapes and desired length and breadth.

Cutting Detailed Patterns in Sheet Metal

When cutting designs from sheet metal, you have a few options.  If the sheet metal is relatively thin and you only need one or two pieces, drawing your pattern with a paint pen and then gradually cutting by hand with tin snips may be practical.  This approach can take a bit of time and practice, but the cost of the tools required is minimal.  If you need a lot of the same piece, a professional shop can create a punch which will allow many of the same pieces to be stamped out using pressure.

For extremely detailed work or industrial production with thick metal up to an inch or two thick, the cutting is often done with plasma these days.  This requires that the metal be conductive since an electrical arc needs to be formed to do the cutting.  This can either be done by hand, or the design can be input on a computer and then cut out with a computer controlled cutter.  This is probably the best way to get extremely detailed designs cut out of thick metal which would be very difficult to produce with more conventional machinery.  Make sure that your workpieces are cool before touching them after being cut with plasma.  Plasma works very well because it doesn't add a lot of heat to the workpiece, has a very fine cut, and won't warp workpieces.  One of these approaches should be sufficient to cut out nearly any type of design from any thickness of metal that you could need for personal or professional projects.

Metal Cutting Band Saw

One of the foundational tools of any real metal shop is a metal cutting band saw. This can be used for cutting large pieces down to size and even for some more precise jobs. It works by using a saw blade that is continuous circle with a blade or cutting surface on one side. It is spun at high speeds in order to grind through the metal. It's usually important to wear eye protection and use cutting fluid in order to maximize efficiency and safety will cutting metal. Some saws may require that you push the workpiece through the blade, while others have a gravity driven blade that cuts through a workpiece that has been clamped down.

Either way, this is a very efficient means of cutting through large quantities of metal with minimal manual work by hand. Once you have a metal cutting band saw, you can investigate buying more special use and esoteric tools for doing more precise and less common jobs now that you can cut your stock down to size.

It's important to remember that while a band saw for wood cuts through the material with teeth and blades, a band saw for metal actually grinds through the metal with some sort of abrasive which is usually silicon carbide or even diamond in some cases. In order to avoid breaking the relatively delicate blade, it's important to recognize when the blade tension is too high, and when you are putting too much pressure on or twisting the metal blade too much. The replacement band saw blades are not cheap!

Metal’s no challenge for this little Milwaukee brute, slicing quickly through everything we put it to: unhardened ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal, plastics and cement board. We were surprised at how quickly the electric brake halts the blade, too: In our very unscientific test, it was about a second and a half, great for repetitive cuts and even more important for safety.
