Plasma Cutters - How Do They Work?

A plasma cutter can pass through ferrous metals like a hot knife through butter, thanks to the unique properties of plasma.

Metal Cutting

So, what exactly is plasma? Plasma is the fourth state of matter. Many places teach that there are three states of matter; solid, liquid and gas, but there are actually four. The fourth is plasma. To put it very simply, a plasma is an ionized gas, a gas into which sufficient energy is provided to free electrons from atoms or molecules and to allow both species, ions and electrons, to coexist. If you boost a gas to extremely high temperatures, you get plasma. The energy begins to break apart the gas molecules, and the atoms begin to split. When the fast-moving electrons collide with other electrons and ions, they release enormous amounts of energy. This energy is what gives plasma its unbelievable cutting power.

Metal Cutting

Plasma cutters work by sending a pressurized gas through a small channel in the cutting nozzle. In the center of this channel, there is a negatively charged electrode. When you apply power to the negative electrode, and you touch the tip of the nozzle to the positively charged metal, the connection creates a circuit and a very powerful spark. As the gas passes through the channel, the spark heats the gas until it reaches the fourth state of matter, plasma. The plasma temperature can reach an incredible 30,000º F -- making a plasma cutter capable of cutting through almost anything.

Plasma cutters work by creating a high velocity plasma flow between a negatively charged electrode and a positively charged one.

One of the advantages of using a plasma cutter is that the surface of the metal outside of the cutting area remains relatively cool; this prevents the warping and paint damage that can occur with other flame cutters. Plasma cuts up to five times faster than traditional torches and does not rely on highly-flammable gases. Many plasma cutters also perform well as gougers and can pierce metal quickly and accurately.

Plasma cutters are now a staple of industry. In CNC (computer numerically controlled) plasma cutting, you can arrange your shapes on a computer screen and cut them automatically and efficiently.

Pros and Cons of Zinc Countertops

The use of zinc and other metals for countertops and a variety of kitchen surfaces is an emerging trend. It provides a warm appearance to the kitchen. The color of zinc is more similar to pewter and not like stainless steel at all. The finish is actually reminiscent of the duller look unique to bullet metals. Over time, zinc oxidizes and takes on a patina like that of an early American cup. Even though it is softer than stainless steel, zinc will resist dents. However, it will scratch with frequent use. Luckily, many people find that it adds to the rustic charm. Trivets and cutting boards are recommended to prevent heat damage and scratching.

Metal Cutting

At any rate, it is a nice change from the cold and institutional look of stainless steel. For those who prefer a cleaner and more polished look to their zinc counters, a clear coat can be applied to maintain a smoother finish. If anyone is unhappy with seeing so much wear and tear, another option would be to polish the zinc regularly to brighten the appearance. Also, the process of sanding to eliminate unwanted scratches and wear is not difficult.

Metal Cutting

Since zinc is a necessary mineral for the body, it is an absolutely safe material to use for countertops. Because the zinc oxide that forms on the surface is a natural inhibitor of mold, mildew and bacteria, it is highly recommended to use on chopping blocks and for food preparation areas. Keep in mind that different foods and beverages may make their own mark on a zinc countertop, but because zinc is naturally nonporous, it is virtually stain resistant. Cleanup and maintenance is a breeze since zinc can be easily wiped down with warm water and a mild detergent. Cleaners that contain abrasives should not be used. If the natural tarnishing process is undesirable, it may be somewhat controlled by waxing the surface with beeswax.

Just like every other material used for countertops, zinc counters can accommodate any under mounted sink of your choice. Another popular option is to have a custom zinc sink welded to the counter so it becomes an integral piece without any seams. In addition to countertops, zinc can be used to fashion other surfaces. Metal tiles and patterned back splashes also are available for a customized look. Range hoods, cabinet doors and wall panels are other options offered to enhance the rustic charm of any kitchen.

The price of zinc starts at about 0 per square foot. Although it is about the same cost as granite, the look is entirely unique and designer. Stainless steel may be durable and look sleek in a modern kitchen, but metals like zinc and copper are able to blend in beautifully with more traditional or old world style kitchens. One benefit that metal countertops have over all the other materials is that they are totally recyclable. As an added bonus, the edges of the softer metal counters can be decoratively shaped in almost any design you can imagine.

Tumbling Media and Compounds For That Great Finish

'Media' is the terminology used to define a material that is used to modify or alter the appearance of a part. It generally refers to an abrasive, but it could refer to any material that can abrade, clean, polish or separate parts. Tumbling media is used in general purpose metal polishing, deburring - both light and heavy, fast and extra fast and aggressive metal removal, fast, heavy cutting, jewellery polishing, burnishing etc. There are many types of tumbling media like ceramic performed shapes, plastic performed shapes, synthetic performed shapes, precision ceramic preformed shapes, carbon steel, stainless steel, hardwood, aluminium oxide, corn cob, silicon carbide grit and walnut shells are some of them.

Metal Cutting

A finishing media company has to give high quality products at reasonable prices to their clients. A fully equipped laboratory stocked with finishing machines where new processes are developed to meet even the toughest application will make them effective innovators. Plastic media is normally used for pre painted or pre plated finishes, polishing and in cutting fast and heavy duty. Plastic media are ideal for soft metals like brass and aluminium and stringy materials. It is useful for providing a smooth but dull finish. These media are long lasting and are built to cut fast and provide a fine finish. With a vast experience, a company can provide customized solutions to their clients. Ceramic tumbling media come in different shapes, sizes and composition. Ceramic media are used for fast deburring and tough metal removal. It is mainly used in cutting hard metals. When media of smaller dimensions are needed, ceramic media offers the best options. It is better than plastic media in supporting very heavy metal parts.

Metal Cutting

Dry finishing media of smaller dimensions are used to polish and finish smaller surfaces like jewellery. For this, cob and walnut shells that are treated are used and a finishing paste is also typically used for this. Very delicate surfaces of any size can also be finished using corn cob media. Corn cob is bio degradable and it is a tumbling grit. It can be applied as tumbling and vibratory media and can dry parts by absorbing oil and dirt, without scratching the parts' surfaces. These products can be used to finish even very small and delicate surfaces effectively. Their product formulas can achieve 1 Ra finish and are made to handle even finishes of a delicate nature for decorative requirements.

There is a wide range of tumbling compounds to satisfy different client needs. Dry compounds, liquid compounds, burnishing compounds, cleaning compounds and deburring compounds are some of the available finishing tumbling compound. There are compounds for standard deburring applications, burnishing of steel, part on part and applications in washing different parts. Walnut shells are treated and prepared by grinding them into different grit sizes. They are used in cleaning as well as polishing of surfaces. It is recommended as tumble media for polishing metals like aluminium, brass and bronze. They are soft abrasives but highly durable and angular.

Quickly cut through all-thread, rebar, metal conduit, steel studs, metal roofing, garage door track, unistrut®, and other materials more accurately with this powerful little saw. It has a high torque, 3,400 rpm motor to cut faster than a portable band saw. When you're up on the roof or on a high scaffolding, or there is no outlet nearby, cordless is the only way to go. Working with metal, cords can often snag on sharp corners, creating an electrical hazard. A cordless tool offers the best solution. This tool is great for automotive body work; electricians, steel/iron workers, roofers, metal fabricators or anyone who wants to cut metal fast will love it. It uses a 5-3/8-inch blade, and has a 2-inch cutting depth capacity. This quality tool has LED lights to light up the workpiece during the cut, which is essential when cutting dark steel or cutting in dimly lit areas.

This metal cutting saw comes with a spark shield to contain the rash of burning mess that comes with cutting steel. Wear hearing protection when cutting steel. This is a tool-only option, meaning it does not come with batteries, charger or a case. It is a great addition to a pre-existing LXT tool or tool kit that uses Makita’s LXT 18 volt lithium-ion batteries and charger. Lithium-ion means more power with less weight and 18 volt lithium-ion is best power-to-weight ratio of any cordless tool. -- Gabriel Shantara Ford
