Small Laser Cutting Machines

There are varied types of small laser cutting machines depending on the type of laser cutting job that you want.

Metal Cutting

You can cut carbon steel with a CO2 laser. The laser is a device that can produce a coherent and concentrated light beam through stimulation of molecular or electronic transitions to lower levels of energy that cause photons to be emitted. Laser is short for ?light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.?

Metal Cutting

Acrylic panels that are cut by laser can be turned into shapes and signs that can be used for lettering outside the building or even inside through laser-cut graphics. There are graphic designers of laser cutting companies that can set up any file to make it ready for laser cutting.

These companies supply products that are laser cut for use by builders, architects, commercial and building designers, floor layers, and other companies specializing in industrial design. You can either set up a meeting with these experts or you can email them for suggestions and advice on the best laser cutting materials and methods.

Commercial building designers are supplied with laser cut panel systems made from aluminum for under boards and eaves. The aluminum laser cut shapes and styles are used by designers of display systems.

Laser cut signs and letters that are dimensional and custom-cut and can build your corporate identity in stores, reception areas, and showrooms. You can even integrate in a cost-effective manner letters and other components into your displays and signage. It also speeds up your fabrication, even in large volumes of work.

Plasma cutting involves burning the materials. The edge finishing is perfect for materials such as acrylic since the laser beam polishes and cuts at the same time. Other materials will either discolor or melt while others can be cut in a precise manner.

So take your pick from various laser cutting tools available on the market.

How to Use Oxy Fuel - Oxygen Acetylene - Cutting Torch Equipment Safely

An oxygen acetylene torch flame is around 6000 degrees F. Considering Steel melts at around 2800F that is pretty freakin hot!

Metal Cutting

You can make a lot of things happen with an oxygen acetylene torch kit. You can braze air conditioning line sets, solder copper water pipe, silver braze stainless steel, weld 4130 chromoly tubing, and even heat and bend metal thicker than 1 inch. But oxy-fuel torches can be extremely dangerous if not used properly. OSHA even requires employers to ensure workers that use oxyfuel equipment to be properly trained and qualified for oxy-fuel welding, cutting, heating, and brazing. (see 29 CFR 1910.252)

Metal Cutting

From my 30 plus years in the welding field, I am constantly surprised by the lack of training in the safe operation of oxyfuel equipment.. Even seasoned welders are often deficient in use of oxygen acetylene torches unless they have received hands-on training where demonstration of proficiency was required

Safe operation of oxygen acetylene equipment requires training, willingness to follow basic safety guidelines, and understanding some basic safety principles:

o Oxygen cylinders are pressurized to over 2500 psi and can become a projectile if knocked over. Always , always, always keep the cap screwed on when the cylinder is not secured.

o Acetylene cylinders are filled with acetylene gas compressed into a porous substance saturated with liquid acetone. They should remain upright to prevent liquid acetone from damaging the regulators and restricting gas flow. If you have to lay them down to haul them, let them stand upright for a while before using.

o Never transport or store cylinders in an enclosed space (i,e, trunk of car, or truck tool box) Welding supply stores often display pictures of cars demolished by the explosion of oxygen and acetylene cylinders hauled in the trunk of a car. They even make you sign a waiver if you want to haul cylinders yourself.

o Never use damaged equipment.

o Always open oxygen cylinders very slowly. Opening them quickly is very dangerous and can cause the regulator to explode. Yes I said explode. (if you don't believe me, just Google "regulator burnout")

o Use check valves or combination check valve/flashback arrestors to prevent reverse flow of gases and to prevent mixing of gases.

o Never use oil on any part of the equipment. Oil in the presence of pure oxygen can ignite easily

o Always bleed down the gases and back out the regulator screws when finished using the torch

There are several different manufacturers of oxyfuel equipment: Victor, Smith, and Harris are 3 of the main brands and each designs their equipment differently with certain features in mind. So the operation of each manufacturer's torches is different. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

The first thing to do when preparing to operate a oxyfuel torch is to inspect the equipment. Make sure the cylinders are fastened securely to prevent them from falling over.. Next, inspect the hoses to make sure they are not cracked or dry rotted. Feel the brass connectors to make sure they are all tight and ensure the cylinders valves are closed with the regulators reading zero.

If the regulators are not reading zero, one of two things is wrong: The gauge or gauges have been damaged or the previous user failed to bleed the pressure from the line. To release the pressure , open the appropriate valve on the torch and turn the regulator screw clockwise until the needle moves to zero. If the needle does not go to zero, the gauge is damaged and must not be used.

If the gauges are determined to be operating properly the next thing to do is make sure the regulator screws are backed out where you cannot feel spring pressure on them.

Here is a simple ABC, 123 checklist to use for setup and shutdown of oxy-fuel equipment.

o Wear proper Personal protective equipment i.e. shade 3 to 5 ANSI eyewear, gloves etc.

o Inspect the equipment for : Overall condition of hoses, zeroed gauges, check valves, torch, chains on bottles

o If gauges are not reading zero, purge lines to let gauges zero out

o If gauges are damaged replace them

o Open oxygen cylinder valves very slowly. (This is the most important step on this page)

o Select proper tip according to manufacturers guidelines

o Use manufacturers tip chart to determine pressure settings

o Set gauges

o Purge lines individually

o open acetylene torch valve to ¼ turn and Light torch

o Increase acetylene flame high enough to where soot disappears.

o Add oxygen to flame until blue cones define creating a neutral flame.

o Perform work

o Extinguish flame by turning off gas valves on torch (manufacturers differ on whether to turn off acetylene or oxygen first.)

o Turn off cylinders

o Purge lines

o Once gauges are zeroed, back out regulator screws

o Return torch to storage place

o Secure oxy-fuel equipment for next user

How to Design a Roof - The Best Rafter Tail Detail

If you're looking for information on "how to design a roof", you probably know that a "rafter tail" is the end of the rafter that overhangs the wall. What you may not know is that the design you choose can determine whether you have a leaky roof edge or not. If you're going to attach a fascia board, you basically have two choices...

Metal Cutting

How to Design a Roof -- Plumb Cut Rafter Tails

Metal Cutting

Plumb cut rafter tails have a vertical fascia board. That's handy for installing gutters because the back side of most gutters is also vertical. But without gutters, much of the water coming off the roof runs down the fascia, where it can rot the wood over time, especially at the joints.

But a far bigger problem is the angle of the fascia to the sloped roof. It varies with the slope of course, but standard drip edge comes with just one angle, which is 90 degrees. Of course the roofer could have custom drip edge fabricated, but more often than not, he "makes do" with the standard stuff, trying to bend it by hand on site to accommodate the angle.

The typical result is a drip edge that not only sticks out at an unsightly angle, but creates a little "dip" at the very edge of the roof. Water lays in the dip, coming in at the seams in the roofing. With the leaks coming through vinyl or aluminum soffits outside the house, they can go undetected for years, resulting in a significant amount of rotted wood.

How to Design a Roof -- Square Cut Rafter Tails

Square cut rafter tails are perpendicular to the rafter. That slopes them down and away from the drip edge. I'm not a big gutter fan, but if you want them, brackets are available to provide a plumb mounting surface. And when gutters aren't used, water can run off the drip edge without ever touching the fascia board.

But the biggest advantage with square cut rafter tails is they accommodate standard 90 degree drip edge perfectly. The face of the metal is flush up against the fascia board and the flange lies flat on the roof, just like it should. That makes it easier for the tradesman to do a good job, which is an important principle when learning how to design a roof or anything else.

Engagement rings with pave diamonds are named for pavement- as in, pave diamonds are clustered so closely together they appear akin to glittery-shimmering cobblestone pavement. So you don't look like a fool when you go to buy one of these bad boys, pave is pronounced ... pah-vay. Pave diamond bands look expensive because all you see are rows of diamonds, but surprisingly, they don't have to be. Pave diamonds are just small diamond chips and thus they typically maximize a ring's beauty, but not the cost. An even cheaper alternative is to use a non-diamond gemstone.

Metal Cutting

Pave settings are constructed by drilling small holes into the ring shank, which the stones are inserted into. The diamond chips used are all approximately the same size and luster. After the stones are placed into the band, minute amounts of metal are molded over the edge of each diamond chip, holding them in place. Pave bands typically use tiny prongs to hold diamond chips in place. This helps to make the row of diamonds stand out while minimizing the appearance of the metal. The most popular metals for pave bands are platinum and white gold, as the pave setting in general, has a very contemporary look.

Metal Cutting

There are two different kinds of pave settings. The first type is a single band with a row of diamonds. The band can be thin or wide. The thin band accomodates small chips while the wide band is suited for larger diamond chips, and will cost more. The other pave design has a wide band with several clustered rows of diamonds set at slightly different angles to each other. Pave diamond bands without a center stone are referred to as eternity rings or anniversary bands.

Old miner cut diamond engagement rings preceded the invention of the light bulb. Hence, the diamonds were designed to be seen under candlelight rather than electric light. These stones would sparkle even in a dim candlelit atmosphere. Many find the soft glow of antique diamonds to be quite appealing.

Miner cut diamond engagement rings, as with other early gemstones in the 18th and 19th century, were cut and polished by hand. As a result, no two diamonds were alike, each having variations in shape and facet size. Today, thanks to technological advances, machines do all the work, sacrificing the character derived from old methods of cutting for perfection. However, antique diamonds often possess incomparable life and uniqueness. This has resulted in the price of old cut diamonds skyrocketing in recent years.

Old mine cut diamonds are often seen in Georgian and Victorian jewelry. Miner cut diamonds date back to the 1830's and maintained their popularity till the end of the century. The cut has a round shape, high crown, and faceted culet. Often the facets come together at the bottom of the diamond and leave a small flat surface.

When evaluating antique diamonds such as the miner cut, they cannot be judged by modern standards. Antique diamonds were cut to maximize carat weight, not brilliance. Often times the proportions of antique diamonds vary dramatically from modern diamonds.

The old mine cut diamond is the earliest form of the modern brilliant cut. The modern cushion cut diamond resembles the old mine cut, but the cushion cut gemstone is more rectanglur shaped.

Metal Casting Processes and Metal Casting Techniques Described

There are various casting processes being implemented now days. The oldest amongst them is sand casting. Spin casting is also widely used. They can be described as follows:

Metal Cutting

Sand Casting: Sand casting involves formation of mold from a mixture of sand and to pour a casting liquid, most probably, a molten metal into mold. The metal is then allowed to solidify and the removal of mold, takes place. Sand molding consists of two types: green sand method and air set method. The first one consists of mixture of clay, moisture, silica, and many other additives. The second one consists of mixture of dry sand and other materials, not moist clay. They are mixed with the help of a quick curing adhesive. The collective use of these materials is called 'air set'.

Metal Cutting

At times, there is temporary plug placed to pour the fluid which is to be molded. Air-set molds usually form molds consisting of two parts-the bottom and the top. The mixture of sand gets tamped down after its addition. It does not generate any by-product. After the solidification and cooling of metal, the mold gets usually destroyed. This is because its removal involves a lot of breaking and cracking. The casting accuracy depends a great deal on the sand and the process of molding used. Castings composed of green sand result into formation of rough texture on casting surface, and this characteristic makes them easily recognizable. Air-set molds produce smoother castings.

Many a times, the casting process results in losing of components of sand mixture. It is possible to reuse green sand by the way of adjusting the composition to get the lost additives and moisture replenished. The entire pattern itself is eligible to be reused for producing novel sand molds. The method of reuse can be continued for an indefinite period. In 1950, casting process got automated partially. They have been in great demand for developing production lines since then.

Spin Casting: Spin Casting is better known as Centrifugal Rubber Mold Casting (CRMC). It implies utilization of centrifugal force for producing castings out of rubber mold. As a customary practice, a mold having shape of a disc gets spun through its 'central axis' at a pre-decided speed. The material used for casting is usually thermoset plastic in the liquid form or a molten metal. It gets poured into the mold through the opening at its centre. Corresponding to the solidification of metal, or the setting of thermoset plastic, the spinning of the filled mold takes place.

Normally, organic rubber or vulcanized silicone is used as a mold-making substrate in spin casting. Vulcanization takes place in the middle of process of mold-making. After the successful completion of vulcanization process, venting and gating must be undergone by the mold. This implies carving of channels for ensuring proper material flow and air during the course of casting. A scalpel or knife is used to carry out the above two processes. The mold complexity is directly proportional to the time required in implementation of venting and gating.

Teak Cutting Boards - Easy on Your Eyes Equals Easy on Your Knives

It's true that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover... When it comes to cutting boards, however, feel free to get downright discriminating, because there's a lot you can tell about a cutting board just by how it looks. Armed with little more than a modest cutting board education and a discerning eye, you can pick the best quality boards out of a lineup.

Metal Cutting

Hardwoods

Metal Cutting

It's roundly agreed that hardwood cutting boards are the best option for serious cooks (who tend to appreciate a sharp knife). Plantation teak, walnut, maple and cherry are not only the top performers where knife wear is concerned, they also happen to be the most beautiful materials available.

Hardwoods, unlike glass and other rigid materials have the ability to both stand up to rigorous slicings and dicings, but yield ever so slightly to let knife blades pass without unnecessary dulling. Think about it, stone countertops may look nice, but you don't see many granite butcher blocks. Cutting boards have to be both extremely sturdy and yet forgiving at the same time, to preserve your cutlery. Because let's face it, a knife with dull blade is just a flat piece of metal with a handle.

Another reason chefs prefer hardwood boards are their natural anti-microbial properties. Unlike plastic, wood cutting boards don't harbor bacteria in their grooves or knife marks, improving food safety. In fact, a study conducted by UC Davis concluded that wood cutting boards trapped bacteria and killed it rather than letting it reproduce.

End Grain

The way a cutting surface is constructed can be just as important as the material it's made from. And in keeping with this post's theme, construction is yet another area in which you can let your eyes guide you to quality. While beauty lies in eye of the beholder, I'm willing to bet that most beholders favor the look of an end grain board's checkered pattern... just do a quick Google search and you'll see what I'm talking about.

For centuries, end grain construction has been the hands-down favorite among chefs because it greatly limits the wear and tear on their sharp knife blades. Much like splitting the end grains of a log, each time your knife cuts across the checkerboard of end grain blocks, the fibers separate allowing the knife to pass through with minimal friction.

Add to that the beauty of exotic hardwoods like plantation teak, and you've got a stunning pattern of blocks that showcase the contrasting colors inside the wood. Since the end grain pattern shows a horizontal cross section of a tree, end grain boards show of the tree's rings.

Sustainability

Though there are few choices when it comes to sustainably harvested hardwoods, the most aesthetically pleasing is also the most readily available. Plantation teak offers the most sophisticated and contrasting grain patterns available. Likewise, these boards offer the legendary durability and long-life that teak is famous for.

Natural oils contained in the teak wood repel moisture, warping, cracking, etc. That's why teak has earned its reputation as one of the longest lasting wood around. FSC certified teak cutting boards are available, helping you feel good about your beautiful cutting board each time you use it.
