CNC Metal Cutting

There are a variety of different CNC machines that offer the ability of metal cutting. You can use a lathe, a plasma cutter, and even a router. The machine that you will want to use will depend solely upon the job that will need to be performed, the specifications and diagrams of the job and the type of material that will be used. Some machines are better with different types of materials. For example, a lathe may be able to cut brass, however, what about 6" steel? As you can see, there is a difference in the capabilities of the machines and what type of materials that can be used so that the job is performed to the right specifications.

Metal Cutting

CNC plasma cutting machines offer the ability to cut through metal using heat. The CNC machine offers more precise cuts that what one can do manually. Large projects that are repetitive can be produced in a shorter period of time. The plasma cutters are usually available as portable devices or as stationary devices.

Metal Cutting

CNC water jet cutting is just another form of metal fabrication machines that can offer precise and detailed cuts. The water jet cutting machines offers nesting capabilities that allow for very little waste of expensive materials. You can produce repetitive products or cut several different products out of the same piece of material. When the piece is finished, you can guarantee that you will have a clean, smooth edge that is cut to the right specifications.

CNC laser cutting machines offers clients another form of metal cutting or fabrication. This machine creates what is known as "shaker" parts because the machine leaves a little piece of metal that connects each piece that has been cut. After the entire piece of material has been used, someone manually has to either shake the sheet to get the individual parts to break off of the large sheet or use a rubber mallet to break the ties. Because of the use of nitrogen and oxygen with the laser cutting machine, one can guarantee that the parts are smooth and professional and that there is no metal slap left over after the process is complete. CNC laser cutting offers extreme accuracy and cost efficiency for every project.

No matter what type of CNC cutting machine that is being used, these machines are usually self contained units and can eliminate, by themselves, a lot of safety issues. However, one still needs to practice safety techniques around these machines as they can still be dangerous. Wearing safety goggles, gloves and possibly earplugs are just a few easy safety tips that you can take advantage of.

The self contained machines leave little mess, hardly any worries of debris or dust particles in the air, etc. They are definitely a step above the former manual machines that were use in this industry. If you have any questions about the CNC cutting machines and what they have to offer or about the differences between them, contact your dealer as they should be able to answer any questions that you may have.

Metal Shear - The Cutting Tool in the Metal Processing Industry

A metal shear is a precision tool which has a high-carbon steel or chromium blade, and is used to cutting a metals like aluminum, copper, brass or light-gauge steel or even plastic.
The various types of shears available are alligator shear, guillotine, power shear, throatless shear and Tin snips.

Metal Cutting

The Alligator shear is more popularly known as a lever shear. It is a metal-cutting shear with a hinged jaw. It is usually powered by a flywheel or hydraulic cylinder. The jaw size used can range from 4 to 36 inches long. These are used to cut steel members such as pipe, angle, etc. The alligator shears are used for cutting long metal stock or to prepare scrap for shredding.

Metal Cutting

Guillotine is also called squaring shear or power shear. It may be powered by foot or mechanical energy. It first clamps the material with a ram and then the two blades make contact with each other to shear the material. The moving blade comes down to the fixed blade and shears the material. The technique used for larger shears is different, with the moving blade set on an angle. The other parts of the equipment include a shear table, work-holding device, upper and lower blades and a gauging device. The metal to be sheared is kept on the shear table and the work-holding device keeps it from moving. The gauging device ensures the right place of cut.

Power shears are powered electrically and are hand-held devices. They are used to cut straight lines or very large curves.

Throatless shear can be used to cut complex straight and curved cuts in sheet metal, because the metal can be moved around the cutting blade.

Tin snips are hand tools that can cut sheet metal and are available in two variants. The tinner's snips are similar to the common scissors and compound action snips use a compound leverage handle system. The tinner snips have long handles and short blades and have extra wide jaws. The straight pattern tin snips can be used for straight cuts and the duck-bill pattern is used for cutting curves and circles or other required shapes. Other variants available include hawk-bills snips, circle pattern etc.

Compound action snips can handle aluminum up to 18 gauge or mild steel up to 24 gauge. They can be used for straight cutting, left cutting and right cutting. The blades are serrated to maintain the friction and prevent the slipping of the metal.

There are many other variants of shears. These may be available in the market according to the requirement of the shapes to be cut and the metal used. Some of the shears are usually designed for cutting soft metals, although occasional use on steel is possible.

Sheet Metal Fabrication Tools - Basic Hand Cutting Tools

Even in this modern day, some basic hand tools are still very must for sheet metal work, no matter a small metal shop or a large one. You should purchase your own set of hand tools and practice using them until you are very proficient. Once you reach that point, metal fabrication work can be a very satisfying and productive work!

Metal Cutting

>> Sheet Metal Cutting Tools

Metal Cutting

1) Hand Shears

Hand shears are powered either electrically or pneumatically. They can cut even very touch steels. Operation manual always come with your hand shear tool, so be sure to read them thoroughly before starting your operation. Hand shears are most often used to blank out sheet metal, which is the process to cut the general shape for the piece to be formed.

You should get a professional grade heavy duty electric hand shear for high speed cutting and trimming of metals. Some can cut up to 150 inches per minute on a no. 14 gauge steel. The cutting head can swivel 360 degree for straight, sideways or angled cutting position. Electric hand shears can save you many hours of time and they make very long and precise cuts, either curved or straight.

2) Snips

Snips look like scissors, however they are very heavy duty and are the most common cutting tools in sheet metal fabrication work. You will need at least three pairs of snips: left cutting, right cutting and straight cutting.

3) Files

Files are used to smooth out the cut edge you make on metals. They are just used as often as any other hand tools in metal shops. There are so many types of files available, usually classified by shape, length and cut.

4) Power Drill

Power drills can be powered either electrically or pneumatically, you should choose one which you have easy access to the power source. The parts of a power drill include the handle, an on/off trigger with safety latch, a reversing switch for changing the rotation direction of the drill bit, a torque adjustment, and the chuck that holds the drill bit in place.

Good power drills are must haves for sheet metal work. The main thing is to get one with a 3/8 inch chuck, and with some high quality drill bits. Power drills require little maintenance but can be damaged by improper use, such as using the wrong drill bit or tip, which can lug down and damage the motor.

Metal Cutting Bandsaw

If you go to a metal working shop then you will note that their most key tool is a metal cutting band saw. These are brilliant for cutting large sheets of metal down to smaller more usable sizes and can even do an amount of precision work. Such band saws are friendly firmly to a surface or program and have a cutting blade that is round in size with incredibly sharp teeth.

Metal Cutting

While using any type of saw it is fundamental to use eye guard and also maintain the blade well lubricated. Nearly metal cutting band saws force you to feed the metal on to the blade, although other saws use gravity driven blades that cut from side to side metal that has been clamped down.

Metal Cutting

Condition you are following a smaller tool then you could bear in mind buying a convenient metal cutting saw. These can be used to cut through thinner sheet metal. A cold metal cutting saw is lightweight and therefore hand held rather than fastened down. Since with a band saw the blade is round, but this smaller tool permits a much greater precision than would otherwise be had.

You will frequently discover that the blade is manufactured from Cermet - a composite metallic/ceramic material that is heat resistant and can retain its sturdiness for a longer instant as in comparison to the old fashioned tungsten carbide blades. With a controlling hand held cold metal cutting saw there should be no effort running with steel sheet metal that is up to six millimeters thick.

The truth that with a lightweight cold cutting saw the blade never gets also hot means that the freshness is reserved for longer and the anti-corrosive coating does not get broken. If you use a metal cutting saw perfectly you must not run off any burrs or symbols on the metal. Nearly all modern metal cutting saws ought to also come equipped with a durable collection tray or container which catches the steel dust or particles that are produced therefore stopping their spreading over a wide region.

A lightweight cold metal saw is used frequently by sheet metal roofers. It allows them to carry out their work with a greater effectiveness in regard to trimming and cutting of the sheet metal and grooved iron that is still usual for saleable and trade roofing. If the metal that is to be cut is tougher than can be carried out with an ordinary metal saw, then it may be needed to use electric cutters or a saw with a specially made extremely abrasive blade.

As with any tool it can take some time to get use to the process of a saw used for metal cutting. If you have never used one before then it makes sense to practice on several extra sheet metal that can be thrown away or ask for a example from someone with knowledge.

Plasma Cutting - Why Is It The Best Metal Cutting Method?

Metal cutting is important for many businesses and industries. What used to be hard or near impossible to accomplish has now been made easy, thanks to the ever evolving technology. As we all know, metal is a super strong substance that is often seen in our everyday lives. What most of us don't realize is what these manufacturers, especially construction companies have gone through to find the best cutting system that can handle their work requirements.

Metal Cutting

One of the most common cutting methods is Oxy-fuel which uses acetylene gas, propylene, LPG, hydrogen, natural gas or propane depending on the type of metal you're working on. It is the most preferred method to cut thick metals that are more than 1 inch in thickness, as it acts faster than plasma. However, when the reality dawned, it was later realized that stainless steel and aluminium could not be cut using the Oxy-fuel technique due to the chemical reaction that occurs when it comes in contact with oxygen.

Metal Cutting

There Had To Be Better Ways So Laser and Plasma Cutters Were Found!

Even though laser cutters are not as commonly used as plasma cutters, it still attracts a fair share of the overall international market. However, due to its expensive pricing and slowness in cutting certain materials, plasma machines have gain its ground and became almost the first choice for anyone that's going cut metals. There is another good reason for it too because while metals like stainless steel, aluminium and copper did not heed to the traditional laser cutting method, plasma cutter was effective on it. In fact, it's been known to be effective on all types of conductive metals.

In plasma cutting, the gas input is determine by the type of metal you're going to be working on. They are fed and compressed into the nozzle and when they are released, they travel at extremely high speed and with the help of the input power, it generate an electric arc the moment they get in contact with air. The extreme heat transforms the gas into a different state known as plasma. During this procedure, the gas heats up so much that when the plasma jet touches the metal work piece, it literally travels through it and breaking it apart. While the flame heats up the metal, the speed or velocity of the plasma jet is what separates the metal elements.

Are Plasma Cutters Suitable To Use on All Types of Metal?

There are some theories about plasma cutter not able to cut certain metals, but this is never the case. By mixing and matching the right gases, this can be easily accomplished regardless the type of steel you're trying to cut! For example, argon and hydrogen form a good combination when it comes to cutting aluminium with a smooth edge. For cutting stainless steel, this mix also works well, however please note that there are other types of gases that can be used as well such as nitrogen.

Before you work on any metal, it is highly recommended that you find out the metal group it belongs to, so that you can tune your machine to achieve the best result. Besides that, one of the most important factors to consider when using a plasma cutter is how thick the metal piece is. If it is a thick sheet, the cutter needs to be set to higher cutting capacity and voltage. However, if you are cutting thin sheets of say aluminium, care should be taken to keep the amps at the minimum, otherwise there is a possibility that the torch might tear off the sheet in an uneven manner. Also, the torch head needs to be kept at a considerable height to give room for a free movement and thereby avoiding the nozzle to be destroyed.

Let's face it, metal cutting is not as simple as it looks. Buying the right machine to start with is one thing. Using it correctly on different surfaces and design is a completely different story. So, before you decide to go out and purchase a plasma cutter. Try to identify the metal type your work piece belongs to, the artwork or template you're trying to achieve, the thickness and finally, how much you are willing to spend! Based on some of the factors we've mentioned in this article, we can't see any reasons why you shouldn't use plasma as your first choice cutter. However, as we always tell people, the money is yours, the business is yours, so ultimately you are the boss in terms of what you want to use!
